Learning Remote Control Receiver Project - A starting point....

Hi All,

I'm interested in expanding my electronics skills  ;D and have a small project in mind which will make use of a learning IR receiver. The receiver will act as a switch, will only require on/off and will need to l'earn' a single IR code of an existing remote control. I'm new to all things IR and am really looking for a starting point / basic guide to understanding how this could be accomplished.
