Recycling LCD Monitors

I've recently dismantled an old LCD TV monitor to make a video projector for an art project, using an old overhead projector and the LCD screen. I want to use the light source from the TV in another project but am having difficulty getting it to work. Just to preface-I have a very basic knowledge of electronics. So the light source was connected to the circuit board with a red and a white wire, directly next to those wire's connection on the circuit board was a ground wire. Now I'm not sure how to replicate that connection. The power range is 9-12v DC, I have the converter, which is a two prong, no ground. so I can't the right connection to get it to light, any ideas?
