High Voltage Shock Device for...Mushrooms?

Recommended Posts

Howdy y'all,

I'm new here.

I read this article online about how lightning can induce fruiting in mushrooms.  It piqued my interest as a home hobby mushroom cultivator.

Article: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/04/100409-lightning-mushrooms-japan-harvest/

It states that mushrooms exposed to a 50,000 to 100,000 volt shock for one ten-millionth of a second induced fruiting at a higher rate than those not receiving a shock.

It sounded like having a Taser might be the trick to shock my mushroom blocks.  But Tasers are too expensive for this experiment.

My searches brought me to several sources which proposed a home-made type of taser from component parts purchased online.  The best instructions & schematic I could find online was a youtube video:

There is a better, written out text description here: http://dnausers.d-n-a.net/prepared/gear/stungun.txt

I watched the video & tried to re-create the parts list & schematic based on what I saw in the video; here is the schematic:

I just realized my switches drawing was off, but I do get how those work. ;)

My questions are:

The 9V power source is from the 9V battery charger or the battery?

Where can I find a 75 PIV Bridge Rectifier?

Where would be a good internet shop for ordering all these components plus breadboard, jumpers, and case?

Can I put this thing into a breadboard to get it to work?

The "neon charge light"...what is that and where can I find it?  The text in the video says: 100 volt neon lamp =L.  I don't understand.  The light is supposed to light up when there is enough charge built up to discharge, but would there be a better way to do that?  Or is it even necessary?

Can anyone suggest a better schematic or see any problems with this one?

Sorry, I'm a total n00b at this stuff, but would be very grateful for some assistance!

In light,

Fr. XLCM
