Is this a ceramic capacitor and is it bad?

I have a Samsung Syncmaster B2230HD which, after a period of about 2-3 minutes unplugged, will turn on and display the menu. After being on between 5-10 minutes it will go into "Sleep" mode and will not turn back on until it is unplugged again for a few minutes (though the LED power indicator says that it is on, there is no picture). When I get the menu to display, that is all that will display, tried with multiple sources of input both on the monitor (both HDMI ports, RGB/Analog PC input,) as well as sources from two PC's and a phone. No picture is ever displayed.

I took it apart looked at it, everything looks normal except what I think is called a ceramic capacitor. Where the leads meet the base of the capacitor is some auburn/amber colored bubbly, but solid "stuff." I think this indicates a leak and needs replacing.

I can make out from the text on the picture below is the model number DA222M DIC which when google'd leads me to a Korean manufacturer . I can also make out 250w (250 Watts I would think) and 1627K (no idea on this one). There is nothing printed on the reverse side.

Any advice on the cause of the issue I'm having, what the numbers/characters mean, the capacitor and/or where to find another would be great!

Not convinced that this cap is your issue. In my experience it's usually an electrolytic cap that is the culprit for what you are describing. Look at the electrolytic caps and see if there is any bulging on the top of the cap. This is a sure sign that one of them is the culprit.

Yes, I have looked at them all from many different angles, they look great to me, though that is not to say one or more couldn't still be functioning properly. I have posted pictures of the capacitors below.

It's strange that it goes into sleep mode. Has it been programmed to do so? Maybe in a menu somewhere for power management? Gotta agree caps look ok. The clear substance on the disc cap could just be glue the manufacturer put there to hold the plastic insulators in place.

I have done some more research and found a post where a gentleman described his problem exactly like mine, exactly the same monitor as well.. He, being much more knowledgeable in this area than myself, found the culprit to be a faulty TL431, "bad precision reference Diode." Link can be found HERE. Pics available only upon registration. I've posted the component in question. Replacement of this part fixed his issue. I might try with that first and let you guys know.

BTW the "bubbly stuff" around the disc ceramic capacitor is just glue to keep the ferrite beads on the lead wires from moving around. That type of capacitor doesn't contain anything that can leak.

I don't think it's glue, considering none of the other ceramic capacitors has the substance, just this one in particular.

Ok sweet, good to know. I've ordered the part from Digi-Key, will update when I get it put in. Also taking the time to fix another monitor I have, just opened it up, a couple of blown capacitors.

BTW anyone know of some good beginner info for this stuff? Been wanting to learn it for a while, want to make some custom LED tail lights ;P

Ferrite beads as has been commented on by Kris :)

Do any of the other capacitors have ferrite beads around the legs? The glue is to stop the ferrite beads from moving due to vibration and shock. This could possibly damage both the legs of the component or the ferrite beads themselves.
Thanks

What do you mean it "will turn on and display the menu"? Do you mean that you can turn it on with the power button, and make the menu appear by pressing the menu button? You don't mean that it does this by itself?

OK. Grab the service manual from Elektrotanya at http://elektrotanya.com/samsung_lpt...0hd_b2230hd_b2330hd_b2430hd.pdf/download.html and have a good look at the fault-finding guidelines. See if you can narrow the problem down to a specific board. You may be able to find a replacement board on eBay. It's probably worth trying to fix it with a board replacement; it looks like quite a nice monitor.

Ok so got the parts in today. Waste of time, short story, my Radio Shack soldering iron wouldn't melt the solder -_- so I used the 180W gun I have tip was too fat and hot, screwed up the board. Oh well, my grandpa was throwing it away, so all in all cost me about $1.50. Ordered some capacitors for another monitor I have, got those on just fine with the fatty soldering gun so score is 1-1 today.

It turned on like normal, but I could use the input selection menu, background was black.

Thanks for the info, already threw the monitor away. I have four already, was just going to try to fix this one up and sell it, oh well.
