The older 1960's and 70's equipment were bomb proof, in that it was easy to add extra speakers to enhance the listening experience. How are the newer pieces? I have a nice projection TV, that is driving a set of 5" full range rounds at 10w and 8 ohms... What's a bit needy as an entertainment center piece. I can add a receiver/ amp but the costs start going up. What are my chances of piggy backing a couple extra drivers in there??

passive speaker needs to connect to your projection TV power audio amplifier.Make model number please.

A set of 5” round speakers is incapable to provide the whole range ( full range ) of audio frequency so loudspeakers consists of different driver units .
Tweeter (for High-frequency range)
Mid-range driver (for Middle-frequency range)
Woofers (for Low-frequency range).

Best would likely be to disconnect the internal speakers and connect some full(er) range external speakers with proper enclosures (e.g. bookshelf type).
Otherwise, if you connected external speakers in parallel with the internal, you could overload the amps with too low an impedance.
Adding an external subwoofer would give a solid bottom end for movie special effects etc. of course, but that does drive up the cost.

So there is a small problem with driving extra speakers, what about series of the same homage with inductors and caps between the coils?

The case looks like it was made for bigger speakers.... And it's kind of quiet...

There should be an inline filter and amplifier circuit that isolates the speakers and amplifys them. Assuming a few MS of redundancy is not an issue.

First read of the coils was 23.5 ohms. Second read of both new and old was 15+ ohms...I think they might swap ..

There is also this option.

I guess my question is about under powering the speakers. I know I have driven little transistor radio speakers with home radios, but they either didn't last long or got hot. Is that backwards incompatible... will the board get hot trying to drive these??? How would I know? The other option seems a more similar style of driver, and a pencil hole in one of the foams...
These have a much larger magnet.

Well here's the diagnostic... Way to quiet. Probably work forever, but it was backwards compatible....
So I will live with the 5" monaural simulators...
Dang. I bet the problem I am having with my HDMI dvd, is probably related and echoed in the in and out segments. I had a bit of signal problems with the external..."old American explorer" brand amp. It's ok as is. Just no room for upgrades.

How funny, I was in the largest desert in the United States; celebrating Veterans Day whose claimed fame is called the monument for military veterans. located in very dangerous, deadly, rugged terrain, in the Sandunes “Glamis” .
California. it is why I suggested you download an upload as I’ve just done because I’m at home now next time I’m out there. I’m definitely going star link!
All the specifications are listed in this service manual of your unit.
Good luck to you…
