    I wouldn't worry about it. We use a disc or flexible piezo with a 1 megohm resistor in parallel with it. There is a limit to how much of a spike that can develop across the 1 meg load because piezos produce only a small amount of current.

    Welcome to the forum. Yes you can expect a slightly larger spike with the larger disc but may not matter at all if the circuit is sensitive enough. We use both 20mm discs and flexible piezo sensors at work. The flexible one produces a higher output but the discs work equally well with our circuit.

    I haven't dabbled with 555's in a long time but every monostable circuit I've seen has a cap from pin 5 to ground. 10nF to .01uF. Try it.

    My entry into microcontrollers was a REV ED Chip Factory programmer. Went into Programming Editor, then into PicBasic Pro. I too had issues with com ports until I found Windows XP worked perfectly. I have a dedicated XP machine just for programming.

    Thank you @bertus. That clarifies lots. @Harald a while back I used a uC to communicate with a chip using SPI. I connected the chip's MOSI (input) to the uC's SDO (output). That's the reason I thought the outputs connected to inputs.

    I have limited SPI experience but it is my understanding the MISO (output) will connect to MOSI (input) for communications.

    There are plenty of 12V and 24V versions out there but everybody is out of stock on the 5V. You could probably use a different manufacturer, solder wires to the pins and match the pin connections to the existing footprint for the original. Sorry I can't be of more help.
