Just When I Thought it was Going to Be Easy

Concept is simple enough. Execution ..... Well, now you know. I'd have 3d printed something by now, but I'm going to assume that is not an option here

clamping action of the fastening hardware needs to be considered. Roland / Boss addresses this issue with a square plastic jack that slips into a rectangular cut out

kinda sketchy .... Punch the case hole oversize and fill it in with epoxy putty. once set, drill the epoxy plug for the barrel connector Hot glue likes to fail in roles like these.

Absolutely not. Then your power supply puts reverse voltage to your project. The thing to do here is figure out some way of insulating the barrel jack from the metal case. Dead minimum, I'd give the case a heavy powder coating to act as insulation. better still is a plastic pass through.

Your signal jacks are negative grounded, meaning the frame is negative side. The barrel connector is Positive frame, with the inner pin negative. In a metal box, your short your power through the connector frames. measure voltage between the frames outside the box, and it'll become crystal clear

At least some of them. Thing is, you somehow had voltage on a dummy pin. The TL081 is technically just a 7 pin device. That tells me that the jack issue was not the only issue. Tear it down to a bare breadboard and start over fresh so you don't carry a legacy error into the next attempt

it's plausible, Some of these jacks have switches too.

Signal in = signal out You'll just need to add a 1M bias resistor and some caps at in and out. If sound comes out, you're using it right

ran into the same issue with different parts back in the day. It was a quad op amp version of the 741. It could be that my data sheets sucked. Ultimately I just migrated to building tube amps because I beat the op amp, hex inverter, and transistor fuzz distortions to death. Due to the quantity...

You said you needed simple terms, so I over simplified it. so we could focus on operational result .... dynamic overdrive. your 500K can be replaced by a JFET type transistor which will do the same thing, but instead of changing value with a knob twist, it'll change with a voltage level. You probably want an active solution rather than a passive one. Unity gain op amps can give you the isolation you need to maintain right and left channel signal integrity, the mix them post op amps to feed to the sub

Well, that's a fair fist full of action really. I'm sure you have a rough understanding of how things function, particularly how the gain pot alters the ratio between it and the bias resistor to control the amount of distortion. With a parts mine like what you have there, you might try amending...

the TL 082 was my go to op amp for this sort of thing back in the day. Speced out similarly to the 072, trading off very little for some cost savings ... Mild bonus when you anticipate silicon to carbon conversion at every turn. every migration seemed to be graced by what you describe ... user...
