    I wired up two different 555's to a circuit, one and then the second after removing the first and both of them got really hot to the touch. I thought I may have fried the first one so I tried the second and the results are the same. Is there a way to test these?

    Is the switch continuously closed causing the contacts to operate? That could be the reason it's overheating, is it fused?

    I would buy a square or round 1/4 inch copper rod, what ever size you need, the rods can be bought in 12 inch or longer lengths, cut to length and file or grind the shape to match the original. These rods are usually under $10 and you'll likely be able to make more than one in about a half hour.

    I may have missed something but can't you take a $5, 24 hour kids watch, have the contacts on the door disconnect the battery to stop the watch and then count back?
