    The board looks very simple design and would not take very much to reverse-engineer it, try drawing the schematic up from it, If your DC supply voltage is ok, it could be the power semi. M.

    If the pot doesn't work you could whip up a PWM circuit to try. http://www.discovercircuits.com/DJ-Circuits/simplepwm2.htm The transistor could be a 2n7000 fet or you may not even need it. M.

    Looks like J1 is the control input, it could either be a variable linear pot style input or a PWM signal, You could try a 5k -10k pot first to see if it works. M.

    If it is a 2 pole motor, a bit under 3000rpm, then you could fit a 4 pole 1ph motor, or get a VFD for the present motor and run it off of 3 phase with a 230v 1ph supply, this will allow you to set it what rpm you need. M.

    For the most part, there are two schools of though, one to keep all parts of the system isolated, and the other to set up common grounds. I prefer the latter, and when setting up control panels that contain control electronics, I set up a common star ground point for all the ground references...

    On the question of power supplies for steppers/servo's I recommend a good linear supply, which can easily be constructed, if necessary. Regulation is not needed for this application, and although SMPS's can be had fairly cheap, they are no where near as rugged. M.
