    Probabally the original set up was for installations that had Either 240 or 120v but not both as you evidentally have ran to the saw, not every area of the world has this set up. If you have the typical 120-0(N) -120 N.A. supply to the saw then you should be able to run the motor off of 240v...

    The transformer is needed to set the coil voltage for 110v when either running on 110v or 220v, if you are sure the transformer is shot then any small 220 to 110 v transformer will work, the auto transformer was used in order to cover both options. M.

    As a last resort, you could open it up, probably destruct in the process, but may be the only way in the end. Did you measure on a Diode range rather than normal resistance range, as this can make a difference to the reading. M.

    BTW, if you want to test the motor, just connect it across the AC supply input, Universal motor operates both on AC and DC. With the field in series with the armature. M.
