    But if you want the resistor to have a long and happy life you need to choose one with a Wattage rating well above 4w, e.g. a 10W rating.

    Welcome to maker.pro! Can you give us an idea of the motor power and the magnitude of any obstructional resistance you are hoping to detect? The solution may be quite different for small-scale low power systems and massive heavy-duty ones.

    I would interpret those markings as indicating 3.3 Ohm resistance.

    That would be best. But if the 100k pot does nothing then the added resistor might not work. Worth a try though.

    Unlikely. You could try connecting a resistor (e.g. something in the range 33k-100k) in series with the 10k pot (or instead of it) and see if that gives some speed reduction?

    No. It means excessively high resistance (probably open circuit).

    Your use of a 10k/10W dropper resistor would be a concern for me. It will dissipate nearly 6W and get HOT. It's a fire risk and not eco-friendly. It will cost more to run than the bulb. Perhaps a mains-rated 6W LED bulb could replace the whole circuit and be left on permanently?

    Are you sure there is actually 3V across that LED? It looks like a normal red LED, which would have about 2V across it (as Crutschow has recognised).
