    Thanks for the replies guys. From doing a bit of Googling I see that adding a reversed biased diode will protect the switching contact from high voltage spikes, but can adversely the response time of the solenoid.     "The zener makes the solenoid response quicker..." Could someone please explain this? I just use a 1N4007 or 1N5408 diode across solenoids etc.

    Old RS-232 compatibility with new computers?

    Have you checked "Control Panel" "Device Manager" "Ports (Com & LPT)" to see if the adapter is correctly installed. Also, what com port is it on? Some RS232 devices will only work on COM1 or COM2.

    Try an ebay search for "150W-DC-DC-Boost-Converter-10-32V-to-12-35V-6A-Step-Up" Hopefully the drop in battery voltage during cranking won't cause it to drop out. Cheap enough to try.

    Is the actuator just a solenoid that trips the lock? If it is use the alarm to operate an automotive style 12v mini relay that has a diode or resistor protected coil.

    First thought was "way too many fuses on the switching circuits". Suggest fit a 5A switch common supply fuse instead of the 30A fuse shown in the second diagram. Delete the fuses between the switches and relay windings. If you are concerned about shorts in the switching wires to the relays...

    Why mess around trying to build something that might work, when eBay has heaps of suitable solenoids that are dirt cheap? Safety on the water is important, so don't risk your, or your family's, safety by taking cheap shortcuts.

    Should wire be Twisted before Crimping?

    I don't twist wires in the uninsulated crimps like the one shown above. I twist the wires in insulated automotive terminals, and give each one a good pull to make sure the wire is securely held.

    For 110v ac input you connect a link between the two terminals. 220v ac doesn't require the link. That is a pretty mean power supply to run a car stereo. I would suggest that you use the adjustment pot to set the output voltage to 13.5v dc. This is close to the voltage that the stereo operates...

    That power supply would be fine. The power supply just has to be the same voltage, and have a current rating higher than the coil current of the relay you choose. A relay similar to this could be a good choice...
