    disconnect switches

Thought that might be what you were trying to do. Never seen it done in the high tension side to the spark plugs. Engine kill switches are usually connected to the low tension side of the ignition system, or to cut fuel to the fuel injection system. Is this a "cheap DIY" alternative to fitting...

    motion sensor using timer

Its amazing how such a small device can do so much. I have always wondered if the original designer of the 555 ever really knew what uses it would be put to. Just checked on Google and see it has been around since 1971, and is still going strong.

    disconnect switches

From memory I believe a spark will jump 1cm in dry air at sea level for every 30kv. So 16kv would be about 5mm. What are you trying to do?

    arduino ide probs

I believe the problem is with your computer, not the Arduino board. What version of Windows are you using? I am using 1.6.3 on Windows7. The "Port" is not greyed out when I open the ide without a board connected. There are two options listed in the drop down list when I select "Port"...

    Water Level Sensor

I probably shouldn't say this, but "I know that I am right". Those are the lugs that the float pivots on. I have seen many of them in my working life. The second photo in the original post even shows the arrow to advise which way is up when installing the level switch.

IC heating problem while using 24 volt smps

Can you swap the 12v relays for 24v ones? Can you replace the 24v power supply with a 12v one? There are fairly cheap 24v-12v reducers available for automotive applications, eg 12v stereo in 24v truck.

    5 pin relay weirdness

Those numbers are standard for automotive relays. The 6 volts on terminal 86 is too low for reliable relay operation in a 12 volt system. Is this measured with the relay connected, or with the relay removed? What is the voltage at the rocker switch? Is the rocker switch the only item that...

    Water Level Sensor

It looks to me to be a water level sensor/switch that the moving magnet has fallen off. See photo in link below, http://electronicaestudio.com/tienda/images/stories/virtuemart/product/sht010.jpg

computer fans - Very basic question from a beginner...!

As previously advised, you need an adapter that is capable of delivering more current than is required by the fans. Running your adapter at full load is not a good idea. I would go with Dave's suggested 1A plugpack. Assuming that you have the fans wired in parallel, here are a few reasons for...

Running a motor at lower voltage - what will happen?

My suggestion would be to contact Venture MFG with details of your application.

Variable Voltage Lab Power Supply Using PSU

What I was referring to when I mentioned "cranking" was the effect that the low voltage during engine starting would have on the equipment I was working on. Electronic circuits designed for automotive applications need to have a fairly wide voltage supply range. The vehicle may have a nominal...

    Choosing right diode..?

This might help you. Uses 8 relays, instead of 12. I only use 1000v 1N4007 and 1N5408 diodes. Don't cost much more and you don't have to worry about voltage. To protect the relay contacts I have added diodes to the solenoid valves. The relays also have resistor protected coils to protect the...

Step down 240v AC to 24v AC

Jaycar MM2012 is a 24vac 3A transformer for $28. Altronics M2190L is a 24vac 5A transformer for $38. Both these companies have branches around Australia. How many solenoids will you be running at the same time?

Why Low output voltage for wind turbine?

I would agree with davenn on this. Just like dc generators don't make good motors.

    Multiple 12V batteries in Parallel

You must have a lot of garden accessories if you are planning a 400AH battery bank. Ideally, for maximum battery life, you should use deep cycle batteries instead of ordinary lead acid starting batteries. Starting batteries aren't designed to be discharged and recharged too often, so will have...

    DIP IC extraction/insertion tools

Just wondering what you folks use to straighten and realign bent IC pins. Also, what do you use to insert IC's into breadboards and sockets? Cheers, Brendan

12v 4 - 500W PSUs: ATX vs single voltage unit

Hi Nelson, Just a few questions etc off the top of my head; 1- Why dc? Could you modify your circuit to run the heaters on ac straight off a transformer without the need for rectifiers and filtering etc? 2- Is this in a domestic or industrial location? I was wondering how you are going to get...
