    He did dunk in and read the cells voltages plus put the probe on the cell itself. There wasn’t any significant voltage difference. Mind you, being a scaredy cat, I didn’t stand too close.     Sounds like a power supply issue or even dirty connections. Filter caps would be my first suspicion, but I don’t know if the unit is line (tel) powered or mains powered. Check the GROUND connections too, as often these deteriorate/oxidise on external metal/clad housings. Martin

    I think the OP is concerned about standby current consumption. Although, most TVs won’t turn on when connected to a mains supply. They usually go into standby mode awaiting a signal from the TVs remote. Martin

    The simplest solution is to change your manual plug in timer for a newer plug in remote timer/on/off module plug. Many variations of this ‘home automation’ plug in style are available. It will mean having two remotes though, one for mains power (timer/on/off) and the original TV remote. Martin

    Use upward of 200 Ohms. @bertus gave you the formula above. The max current for your LED is probably 25mA. But it all depends on the required brightness. Try a 1K resistor and see if the brightness is acceptable. If not, come down in value and see what brightness you prefer. Martin
