    Yes, that's definitely the noise of an overloading (going into self protection) psu. The fault is most likely on the secondary-side. Check the secondary-side rectifier(s).

    The fact that the schematic has been 'modified' by hand-drawing the FETs in makes me suspicious..... it may relate to a later model and/or upgraded device rather than the original unit. I'd (temporarily) wire in some transistors to prove correct operation first....

    'Ticking' is usually indicative of a PSU going into protection mode for one reason or other. The fault may not necessarily lie in the PSU itself (as common as that actually is) so if you can disconnect the PSU board output and the fault (ticking) stops then you will need to fault-find the rest...

    Where you have drawn the FET symbols, their connections (i.e. the gate) are connected to the 'board' at points marked 'b' and the sources at points marked 'e'. 'b' and 'e' usually refer to transistor connections - base and emitter, not FET connections.

    The board schematic indicates the off-board devices are transistors (i.e. connections to 'e' and 'b'), not FETs. Do you have the part number for the original devices used?

    Not really. The solder is required for the electrical connection. You could, after soldering it, add some epoxy glue to give the socket additional mechanical security but it must be soldered first.
