    I have to counter this question with another, how many amps we talking? if its to start a car engine you need about 100 cranking amps which most step downs won't be able to do. just stepping down a voltage is not the only thing you need to look at, also look at current ratingand let us know...

    actually i just wiki'ed it. I thought the earths magnetic pole could be used for making a small current, it turns out I was slightly wrong and found telluric current. I can't find too much out on how many volts though or standard current, but I have found that it was used to help telegraph...

    lol I thought your idea was for lightning originally. but the earth battery was a technic used to boost signal on the old telegraph system. I am very dubious this will create huge quantities of voltage but yet it is another for of alternate energy that is out there.
