    Getting an identical replacement is really only necessary if space or aesthetics is an issue as 'any' preset pot that can be wired in will do the job. That said, it's a 10k pot (as Martaine says) and otherwise 'as common as muck).

    The generator, certainly. If you have an inverter-generator you'd be ok - a much cleaner and safe power source - but most none-regulated generators have 'dirty' i.e. lots of harmonics on their voltage output and this is known to cause damage to SMPS circuitry.

    You can 'pulse' discharge a large Ahr battery and take the measurements very quickly - this reduces the dissipation in the measurement load considerably. Use a high current MOSFET (low on-resistance) and suitable load resistance and program accordingly.
