    The V control pin is separate so you can reduce the power dissipated by the internal transistor by running it from a voltage very close to the output voltage. As Hop mentioned I believe the package is used even with an NC pin for it's thermal properties. Adam

    But if you measure across the resistor what do you get? This is where it gets interesting... If you try it with another voltage say 10 Volts, what do you get? And if you measure across the inductor what do you get? This should confuse you initially. Well it might do :) Adam

    First thing I would try is adding some supply de-coupling and support. Add as close to the IC as possible a 100 nF across each ICs power supply pins. Also add a 2.2 uF- 10 uF Tant or electrolytic capacitor ideally across each ICs power pins (observe correct polarity) but if you can't do that...
