Possible new job. Looking for advice.

Hi all, I am possibly having an interview next week for a new job. I am giving up the building trade and hopefully entering the electronics industry. Main reason is my tools have been stolen again and my love for my hobby. The company is N.e.m.k.o (without dots) and they certify goods for CE and...

    Dead PSU Compaq 308439-001

It is always possible that a diode just failed short, but not likely. Remove the diodes or bridge IC and check to see if a short on the PCB is still present. If it still has a short, check the switching transistor and capacitors. Martin

Simple, or so I thought. Creating circuit to transform 24vac control to 12vdc.

Your diagram in post #4 is correct and should work how you want it to. However, with AC input and possibly very cheap buck converters, you may get some leakage to the outputs. Testing with an LED may not be sufficient. You might need a minimum load. Try connecting a vehicle 12V bulb to each...

    FR & RF Thermal fuse.

That's quite funny Dave, my son said something very similar. RF is Rice Fuse.. FR is F***ed Rice.. Ah well, made me smile. I'll let myself out.... Martin

    Has a PCB Been Powered?

For your fridge example, I'd guess it has connectors where a push fit would mark the pins or terminals suggesting it's been connected. Or simply placed in a sealed bag. Therefore not new any more, so no returns. That by itself begs another question, warranty of new board. Perhaps under...

    FR & RF Thermal fuse.

I'm still none the wiser except that RS components confirmed there are others too. SF for example and told me "don't worry about it". Well, I'm not worried as the temperature is the important part. The Amperes is just the max like most components. Thanks to all for your responses. Martin

    Has a PCB Been Powered?

That's a very confusing question. They cannot tell if a PCB has been powered up. Unless of course it's a warranty return with burnt components on the PCB suggesting it was incorrectly connected up. I'm sure there are microcontrollers that hold data on power cycles too, but they'd have to power...

    FR & RF Thermal fuse.

Hi all, I have been searching for the difference between FR and RF with respect to thermal fuses. There isn't much I could find out but hoping somebody here will know. It's for a rice cooker (184c 16A 240V). The only reasonable priced item is a 185c 15A 240V. I can't see that 1 degree C will...

Need a new multimeter - any thoughts

I have both and they are both as good as each other. While trying to measure parasitic battery drain on many vehicles, you have to wait upto 45 minutes for the computers to shut down and go to sleep. So the auto shut off is of no use in those circumstances. Martin

PSU 5V line seemingly not performing

Sometimes, a visual inspection can be all that's needed. By either a swollen top, vented top, obvious leakage or out right blown a part. But an ESR meter is by far the best way. If the cap/s are not shorted, a similar cap tacked to the suspect one usually improves performance immediately...

PSU 5V line seemingly not performing

By your diagnosis, it sounds like the 5V rail is present until under load. A simple test would be to tack another capacitor across the existing one. But as @dave9 says, you have two to compare measurements. Martin

PSU 5V line seemingly not performing

I would check the capacitors for high ESR not capacitance. Replace them, they are too cheap to worry about. Then check the PSU again. Martin

Sensor required to sense if a human is wearing the helmet(for motorbike) or not

What will the sensor do with the information? Is it wireless? I would have thought a parallel array of tactile switches inside the top would work. You have to think about the sweat, heat and air circulation as well. Some form of 'break beam' LED sensor placed either side may work. Martin

    Dead PSU Compaq 308439-001

It looks like factory goo to absorb vibration and simply glue components. Given the colour codes of the wires, it's obviously a computer PSU. Completely dead?. Check the input voltages, cables and bridge rectifier. Martin

How to repair broken USB flash drive?

Yes, two of them are not clear. Try turning the board over and shining the light again. You may need a multimeter to check continuity of the tracks and which component to connect a bridge to. Martin

How to repair broken USB flash drive?

Hi, if the solder pads have broken away, you'll need to add some small guage wire to act as bridges. You'll need to use a multimeter if you can't see where the tracks go. Shine a light under the PCB and you may see where the tracks are connected. Martin
