    The CD player wasn't vinyl and has no audible difference to flash memory stored data. It's now just a more failure prone, far more space, cost, weight, and less power efficient way to store and read data. If you'd rather a record player, do so.

Definitely cleaning dust out is the first try, but it may also have had the lubrication dry up and the guide rail sled is worn, or the plastic warped, or broke, or the motor isn't at speed or wobbling due to shot bushings, or if in a (vehicle) high humidity environment...

    If the center tap of the transformer has its own, locationally isolated lead to this point so it is a star ground config to avoid ground loops, that can work. If it does not, apparently they didn't care or tested and found negligible difference.

    ^ True, but these cost ~1/5th as much and will suffice to start out the hobby. A lot of people might get one, use it for 5 years then decide they want to put down $100 on a Weller or Hakko, etc. Some others don't use their iron enough to ever get the value out of a $100 station.

    pic 1, probably doesn't matter, just two pairs of CFL tubes supply lines. pic 2, doesn't look like enough wires for a control board. pic 3 is a switch and who knows what else (wouldn't need 4 wires and the rest of the terrible pic is too dark).

    Might help if we could see more of the board. Best I can make out is the chip is marked RT??3AH. The second question mark might be a 5, first question mark looks blown off the chip. Without anything else to help, I'd guess it's a voltage regulator.
