    The 'interference' has a periodic value - can you associate that with any clock or timing within the device? Does it change with range? Strange(ish) how it's only on the red signal line too - post D-A conversion?

    You need only develop a timing routine that takes a parameter you 'send' and incorporates it to the 'size' of the delay. i.e. if you decide on a maximum position accuracy of 1/255th of a (swing of the servo rotor) rotation then send a number between 00 and FF to be included in a timer routine...

    No problem - I think it may have something to do with WinXP and it's relatively slow access to the serial port (could be talking BS here! but I think there are similar issues accessing the serial port when using Visual Basic) as the same software seems to work just fine on a more powerful PC...

    Just use a buffering device (transistor or MOSFET) to switch the IR LED. You can then apply shorter, higher power pulses to the device.

    The small 'tin can' module is common for IR receivers, housing the sensor that often contains the pre-amp and signal conditioning circuitry (but not always). Follow the wire that comes from that tin can and show a picture of the circuit board that it connects to.

    You can switch a triac on with an AC signal but are you sure the signal you are measuring is AC and not a simple pulsed DC? Either way any conventional device (suitably rated of course) would probably be a decent replacement.

    You might find that there is a thermal fuse fitted against the transformer windings. Look for a 'bulge' under the tape and, working carefully so you don't cut any of the winding wires, you might be able to get the fuse out and replace it.

    What makes you think 8A is wrong (for the running AC unit?). Is there an actual fault with it? Most motor-driven items require a larger starting current than running current and the use of a 20A breaker is consistent with the 'in-rush' current requirement else a smaller-rated breaker would...
