    I'm wondering if tying orange with green is warranted to establish a better (low resistance) connection. I imagine it would work either way although there might be a tiny amount of signal loss, depending on how the jack is constructed.

    Good call Martin. Microphone levels are usually around -60dbm, and a pre-amp should boost to "line" levels around -10 to +5dbm.

    Don't put larger fuses in, or your risking damage to amplifier circuit. Just a guess here, but I'd say that do to age of amp, there may be failing capacitors or other components at fault. Take some close up pictures of the board, or better yet, post a schematic. Just for the heck of it, swap...

    What I meant is, the inside portion of the power jack may have been negative on the original ac adapter, and the ones you are trying have positive on the inside. Then again, it could have a blown fuse inside. I would not guess at the voltage as that could fry it. Might be worth taking apart...

    Is there any info on the back? You might have to take it apart to figure it out. There is also the possibility that the polarity is wrong on your adapter. (Positive and negative backwards)

    You should be able to drill the corners with a small hole where there is a margin with no conductors. If you look on the back of the breadboard it will be obvious.

    Just a guess here, but I think this is a 300w heater. If that's the case, 12awg would work, but I'd go with #10 thhn, thwn or similar 90c rated insulation. At any rate, you know it doesn't have to be larger than the incoming feed.
