Hot Air Station - Finally arrived!

Haha Bob, This cost me around £35, this isn't my particular brand but they're all the similar. =] Very affordable, even on my student income. I love the thrill of de-soldering those capacitors and resistors, to much air flow and poof!

Hot Air Station - Finally arrived!

Hi Guys, Just would like to share my excitement for my new hot air soldering station. What an awesome piece of kit to have, I'm looking forward to repairing a few things I outlined in my previous posts. An interesting thing I've noticed with this tool, is how precised you have to be when...

USB Memory Stick, unknown smd components

I have two of the missing components, but I doubt anything would be measurable because they are burnt. It's all about the data really, so yeah I'm going to try and find out where to buy the same one. Swap the components over. If in the meantime I do find a schematic, I'll post it =D Cuz I...

USB Memory Stick, unknown smd components

On the board it says D*, R3 and C4 So maybe there's a diode missing aswell? It's a cheap one, so I can't find the manufacturer mark.

USB Memory Stick, unknown smd components

Hi Guys, I have a usb stick which has become damaged due to dry solder on all 4 usb contacts on the pcb. I tried to do a 'quick' fix, which I wish I hadn't done. Because the soldering iron removed two smd components off the board. I've finally bought a hot air station to replace the smd...

    Creating my own transformer

Thanks Colin =) I completely understood that the current in the primary and secondary windings is not the same current flowing through the core. I also understand that the flux penetrates the core and induces eddy currents. Still not sure about the questions I listed on my last post.

    Creating my own transformer

Hi Guys, I've read more or that pdf document. Altough it's nice to understand more about eddy currents, I have more questions lol. So at higher frequencies the eddy current flows at the outer edge of the conductor. And different frequencies produce different penetration depths. I know that...

    Creating my own transformer

Wow, it is a good pdf file. What a strange phenomenon, I've only read the first few pages. I will read time rest tomorrow. Thanks Dave, this deserves printing for a hard copy =) It's strange to think that the current only flows at the surface of the conductor at high frequency. I'll read...

    Creating my own transformer

Okay, lol. Well I think this might be linked to an electromagnet wave and it's counterparts. An magnetic field produced by the inductive means of an electromagnet or the transformer windings. And the opposing electric field produced around any nearby particles containing electric charge. So...

    Faulty Laptop Charger - 0.7mm

Thanks Steve! I'll open it up and see what I have to work with. Will be a few days because I have uni tomorrow. I'll get back to you on this =)

    Creating my own transformer

First of all I know that in an ideal transformer the input power and output power are approximately the same. Since P = VI, stepping up or down the voltage respectively decreases and increase the current. Which maintains the same power. Of course there are losses. I know that if you have twice...

    Creating my own transformer

Interesting you saying all that. Still can't quite believe the size of those vacuum tubes to the size of a small semiconductor today. Lecturers talk about them now and again, but it's not in our course guide anymore. I have this transformer: http://tinyurl.com/msh48wb I separated the E and I a...

    Creating my own transformer

I've studied transformers alot, so understand why the bobbin is used and the core is laminated to prevent losses. The purpose of this is to learn more about transformers practically. I have a square transformer core which is already laminated but with a slight dent on one edge . I also have...

    Faulty Laptop Charger - 0.7mm

Yeah those hot air soldering tools are fantastic for miniscule soldering like this. Sadly I don't have one. To fix an expensive laptop however, I might consider buying one.

    Creating my own transformer

I'm not sure what frequency is best tbh, but I was hoping to use a low alternating triangular waveform. If that would even work. What's a bobbin?

    Creating my own transformer

I would like to create my own transformer for practical purposes. I would need a square shaped core that is laminated. I can't find where I could buy one, that is large enough and just a square. I'd like to have it around 20 cm x 20 cm. Does anyone know where to buy one?

    Faulty Laptop Charger - 0.7mm

Thanks for your reply guys, it's the original charger. I'm sure it's the right size plug. The fault is definitely the female receiving end. I've looked at the laptop and know how to take it apart carefully. However, I'm worried about soldering a new female plug. I'm scared the trace will...

    Faulty Laptop Charger - 0.7mm

Hi Guys, I'm having issues with my laptop charger. Its a problem with the dc plug, which has an internal diameter of 0.7mm and external diameter of 2.5mm. When plugged into the laptop, it feels really lose. When you put slight pressure on it, it starts charging like normal. I've tried...

What can I do with this motor?

Thanks guys, I would go to the scrap yard to fetch one. But I don't drive so will have to find a way around it. Best to get an alternator with a regulator on aswell then. I like that washing machine motor too.
