    Without knowing what they are actually using as a current controlling device it isn't reliable to operate it at anything other than the voltage specified. If they genuinely mean '5V' then it's likely that it's just a series resistor to limit the current - pretty crappy as far as laser diodes...

    Possibly. LEDs require anywhere from 1.2V to 3.6V (colour-dependent) so what LEDs are you using? If you can give a part number we can check the datasheets and see what the manufacturers say.

    Probably a snapped dial cord. The tuning knob has a cord wrapped around it that moves the scale pointer and the tuning capacitor. If the cord snaps you lose this ability. It can be difficult to fix if you don't know the correct threading route - the technical manual should reveal this though...
