    It can only be down to timing now. I'm not prepared to delve into your coding but unless you can adjust individual parts of it you will require digital monitoring to check the timing waveforms.

    Using bare wire you can probe the volume control wipers and you should hear a response (crackle or hum) that varied with the volume control - this would (potentially) prove the amplifier to be working.

    On a very basic level, try using an insulated 'poking stick' and press around the pins of the volume control and any connectors joining the volume control pcb and the main amplifier pcb. There may be a simple fracture of a track cutting the audio path.

    ...and thereby lies the rub. Capacitors have been the most regular faulty component in many devices I've repaired over the years. The OEM would probably have sworn blind that they used 'quality parts' and the equipment would work 'for a lifetime'.

    How is your timing achieved? Do you poll the EEPROM to check that the write cycle has been completed? This from the data sheet: The end of a write cycle can be detected by DATA POLLING of I/O7. Once the end of a write cycle has been detected, a new access for a read or write can begin.

    Wire your push button between A1 and B1. Set the switches to achieve the function that you require. It's all in the data sheet!

    Feed the output signal to the base of an NPN transistor via a 1k resistor. Connect the emitter of the transistor to 0V and put the load in the collector circuit (one side of the load connected to the collector, the other side to the supply).

    Why do you think your washing machine requires one? Any machine that has an SMPS will have legally-required basic minimum EMI filtering fitted as standard. Are you experiencing a fault (interference) that is happening despite the installed filters?
