    Model engineer needs help

What's a ferroequinologist? A person who studies the effects of iron on horses? Or does it mean that you make horseshoes? The word is not on dictionary.com and inquiring minds want to know, mate :-)

    Microcontrollers For C

Depending on your application, I'd also suggest the Texas Instruments MSP430 series. There's a huge range of devices. They have a 16-bit core and are generally more capable than the PIC and AVR (though smaller than the ARM) and IMO the peripherals are pretty well-designed, which can make a big...

    TDA7052B, but not one..

Are you looking for a voltage-controlled attenuator without a speaker amplifier? If so, look for VCAs (voltage-controlled amplifiers) on digikey and/or mouser.

    Mysterious diode identification help!

OK Will, thanks for the responses. Here is the schematic, which I think is complete apart from the details of T1, and a photo of both sides of the board with component references that match those I assigned on the schematic. Without the details of T1 I can't be too sure how the circuit...

    Problem with old ceiling fan

Thanks KJ6EAD. I should have followed my own advice and looked online first for the right answer, instead of posting my vague and uninformed opinion!

    Problem with old ceiling fan

I think 5-56, 2-26 and WD40 are all pretty similar.

    Mysterious diode identification help!

That photo is excellent, nice work. I've nearly finished drawing out the schematic but I have a few questions. 1. What is the rating of the fuse? Is it the 5A/250V one that you replaced? Does it have any other markings like a letter T (meaning "time delay")? What does the wire look like...

    Problem with old ceiling fan

I hope you can find a repair shop that will be flexible about it. As long as they know that you're prepared to pay for their time, they should be OK with it. If possible, ask to speak to a tech.

    Problem with old ceiling fan

Sounds like a good plan. Just ask them to do what they can, and tell you what they find, what they've done, and what they think, not to guarantee that they will be able to fix it.

    Problem with old ceiling fan

I was referring to something like CRC 5-56. I'm not sure whether it exists in your country. It's an oily liquid in an aerosol can, that's used for loosening rusted bolts and expelling water from car electrical systems, that sort of thing. I imagine it would dissolve any grease inside the...

    What is going on.

Yes, 9V would be pushing it. The LEDs in the collector paths will reduce the voltage on each capacitor though. I'd estimate Vbe around 7V with a 9V supply. A poorly designed circuit on a random web site. Who would have guessed :-)

Yes they are, well spotted duke.

Driving the Cathod of a seven Seg display

There is a problem with your schematic, and in any case, it's only a tiny part of the design, so it's impossible for us to tell much from it. Also, I don't think the MAX7219 is the best solution for what you want to do. The MAX7219 has current limiting built into the segment drivers. The...

    4047/4066 audio slicer help

No problem. That's great that you have an oscilloscope! An old one will be fine.

    4047/4066 audio slicer help

I've been looking through some application notes for the LM13700. (I should have done that BEFORE I designed the circuit, huh!) I've updated the schematic with some resistor value changes (and one removal - ROL). You might find this article interesting; it has suggestions for other types...

    Problem with old ceiling fan

I would guess that too. So can you clean the bearing? (Assuming you can get access to it.) Maybe spraying lubricant into it, then rotating it, would make the gunk come out? Then you would re-lubricate it, with grease I suppose? Well put!

    4047/4066 audio slicer help

OK Ben, here's my suggestion for an LM13700-based circuit. There are a number of new ideas that I've introduced to simplify the design. I've kept the 9VDC power supply. The circuit would work better at a higher voltage; even 12V would help, I think. But you can't exceed 15V unless you add a...

    Problem with old ceiling fan

OK, well if that's all the information that's out there, no one here is likely to know any more about them, are they? He can use that information to find out how to dismantle the thing, what kind of problems they usually have, and what kind of maintenance he can try on it. There's nothing we...

    4047/4066 audio slicer help

Re the LM13700, yes that's the basic VCA circuit. That circuit uses +/- 15V power supply rails; I assume you want to use a single 9V battery for your power source? The LM13700 won't work quite so well at such a low voltage, but you could try it. Also I'd suggest using an active splitter to...
