How to make use of this

After looking at your photos it would appear that power (230VAC) is applied between the Red and the Black conductors. Chris

    Inductors!

Here's some additional minutiae to further muddy the water. Solenoid and Relay coils are inductors too but their inductive properties are more of a byproduct than their purpose in life. The same can be said regarding wire wound resistors. In all three cases it would be preferable if they...

    why we need Load resistor?

Hi Duke, I don't think it's a question of right or wrong. My post in question didn't address inter-stage power transfer of valves or solid state. It dealt only with the PA stage and what it sees looking out into the output port and what the load sees looking back into the output port. It was...

    why we need Load resistor?

Hey Duke, I'm a bit confused. You didn't specify exactly where I'm "a little wrong"? Ha,... if I am, it won't be the first time in my life, and most assuredly it won't be my last! :p That said I need specifics. Uh,... without being nitpicky! :D Chris

    why we need Load resistor?

Perhaps some of this muddled thinking can be traced back to vacuum tube power amplifiers, whether it be in audio or RF applications. In the case of audio power amplifiers it was good practice to match the load with the typical 8R output impedance of the output transformer. Cranking up the gain...

    why we need Load resistor?

Here's another angle to look at this. If the source and load have the same impedance then whatever power is dissipation in the load will also be dissipated in the source. If you think about this it's hardly a desirable condition. Chris

Measuring the inductance of a wirewound resistor

Actually no. Don't confuse the bad press about government $10,000 toilets and $500.00 hammers with Mil Spec. This thing was built like a Brinks safe! Every component (mechanically and electrically) was a work of art! The main variable cap (fo) was silver plated with 1/8" thick blades! The geared...

Measuring the inductance of a wirewound resistor

On a side note my collection of historic instruments includes a (portable) 100KHz - 30MHz RF Signal Generator, circa 1930's. It was manufactured by General Radio Corp. for the U.S. Navy. I think my first hernia can be traced back to the first time I attempted to lift it. Back in those days the...

Measuring the inductance of a wirewound resistor

Hi Adam and thanks for the answer, though I'm not sure it exactly answered my question. I'm going to go with your spice program didn't like a short across the wwr (L2) so you inserted .1R. FYI, your spice shouldn't object to zero R if you added .1R to the properties of L2 as ESR. Personally...

Measuring the inductance of a wirewound resistor

Does L2 represent the wire-wound resistor (DUT) with a .1R non reactive resistor across it or does it represent the "shorted" resistor with the .1R representing L2's ESR? Chris

Follow-up: I found an IE add-on (PasswordBox Helper) that would not permit me to disable it. I didn't install this add-on, so I don't know how it got there. The PasswordBox Helper may or may not be malicious in itself but may be being used by other malicious programs or internet worms. I...

Measuring the inductance of a wirewound resistor

Adam, your suggestion intrigued me, so I did some experimenting that produced very poor results. I then re-read your post, which I misread the first time. Please elaborate more precisely so I can insure I'm replicating the test setup as described.. Chris

Measuring the inductance of a wirewound resistor

Back when I was too poor to have all the toys I wanted and the stuff we have today would have seemed like science fiction, I used a sweep + marker generator along with a known cap value to produce resonance. Theoretically speaking the resistive element will only effect the Q. Chris

    Velocity Factor

Yes, I like it. The most fun I ever had with a scope was the first time I experimented with TDR. My reaction to the scope display was "Is this is the coolest thing ever or what?! That was a very long time ago. ;) Chris
