    Solar cells only work during the day. If you connect a battery and use the solar to charge the battery, the LEDs can be almost anything you want so long as the battery has the capacity and the solar cells are selected to recharge that amount in around 4 hours of daylight.

    Running those types of loading off the mains may well just attract the attention of the local supply authority. Have you considered approaching them beforehand to get their ok...? Just that they normally don't take too kindly to large surges that their equipment may not be able to handle and...

    Toroidal Transformer

    It might just be something as simple as a dodgy headphone socket. Seen that before. Inside the socket there will be miniature contacts that direct the audio either to the headphones or the main amp. The crackling sound you referred to earlier sort of points that way.

    Current activated relay with timer

    Why cut-in to the circuit, only need to plug microwave into a timer. Plenty of them around. Reset at each operation.....easy. Plus no pensioner is going to be able to re-program the timer, they will need a four year old for that. :)

    You could use 2 simple single pole momentry changeover switches(microswitch for example) Other than that the H bridge I mentioned in #2 if you plan to run a microcontroller for some such reason.

    Hbridge.......but there will be other considerations you probably haven't thought about.....inductive reactance ....time for solenoid to physically move being just a couple....i doubt the armature will get very far in a few milliseconds

    What would output be for a 1K resistor? Bit conflicting info as the spec says it outputs 9 to 13mV in air. Do you need it to trip a circuit or more range as Arduino analog input will convert 0-5v into 0-1023. Other than that a standard opamp should do it.
