** The jack has three connections - clearly visible in the pic.

Ie - it is a "stereo" jack.

Well, that's the problem Phil - there are three connections in a
stereo jack. How do you get FOUR audio signals out? You'd need five
connections for all the speakers it claims to drive on that wire.

Now, go learn how to read a simple speaker wiring diagram.

Hint - a 7.1 system has 8 speakers.

** Never said you did.

You'd need five
connections for all the speakers it claims to drive on that wire.

** Where is that claim ?

Now, go learn how to read a simple speaker wiring diagram.

** That graphic is not a diagram.

Hint - a 7.1 system has 8 speakers.

** The sound card in question is clearly not true 7.1.

it shows the rear and side speakers are on the same output jack. then
how can they sound independently?

They can't. The diagram clearly shows that the soundcard must be only
capable of 5.1, whereas the speakers are 7.1. You need four stereo-type
output jacks on the sound card for true 7.1.

I prefer SPDIF, it removes the confusion _and_ the mess.
