American Telecom 5100 Series Telephone having crack noise

My American Telecom 5100 Series Telephone is broken. It has
crack noise when I press the talk button (when I am ready to dial).

The user manual is searchable on google (I cannot post link).

I suspect it was due to a recent lightning... can anyone give me some ideas how to fix this?
