I have a small synchronous 120 v AC motor that is going to power a tracking device. It calls for a capacitor so can I use a DC capacitor which I have plenty of and anyway what is the difference in construction not including the polarized DC caps I know they wouldn't work on AC.. Thank you for your time...Jeff:

As you say, you must not use polarised electrolytic capacitors.

If you use plastic film capacitors which are not polarised, they normally have a DC maximum. For AC use, the voltage rating must be much higher. For 120V AC I would suggest at least 500V.

There are capacitors intended for motor start or motor run and these should be preferred.

You do not say what capacitance you need.

Hi duke37 Thank you for the information, the motor calls for 1.5mfd and I suspected that a DC cap in an AC circuit would need a high voltage rateing if it could be used at all...Thanks...colum
