Correct Italian Pronunciation

Hello John,

That's it, I think. "Macie" pronounces like we say "macho" except with
for the end. It's longer that in "ye", more like "ye-eh". But not like
the Canadian "eh"...

Jim, "Chianti" would be like "keeanty" but I guess you knew that.

I am not Italian but have been there a lot and love it. Neighbors in
Germany were Italians and so I heard it a lot. If you want to see some
fine wines plan at least a week in Tuscany. Siena, San Gimignano and so
on. Stay in a local place. Once an old guy there sold us a huge bottle
of what he said was his finest. No label and when he blew the dust off
the bottle he almost coughed his lungs out. At first we thought he might
want to offload some stuff to tourists but it was one of the finest
Chiantis I ever had. Really nice people there. Except when behind the
wheel, then it's more like Mexiko or New York.

Regards, Joerg

What we're thinking of is flying into someplace like Frankfurt or
Zurich, and then just driving for 4-6 weeks.

Can someone provide me with the correct PHONETIC pronunciation of

Rocca delle Macie

Try Rocca di Montegrossi instead. Not only is it easier to pronounce, it's
tastier.

Pretty sure it's called aged, stinky, near death spew.

Have another drink. Speed up the process.

Back again?

Too bad. I thought we'd already dispensed with you and your THC
induced fantasies.

Not that THC is bad, it isn't.

The problem lies with genetically inferior idiots like you who,
after engaging hallucinogenics for recreation, suddenly think that
they've been made privy to the secrets of the universe but can't
quite work out how to tell everyone else that they should be doing
it your way.

Piss off.

Hello Jim,
What we're thinking of is flying into someplace like Frankfurt or
Zurich, and then just driving for 4-6 weeks.

Sounds like a good idea, as long as you reserve plenty of time for one
region. I'd probably fly into Rome and take it easy.

Have you ever driven in Italy? It certainly is not for the faint of
heart. Make sure your rental car has a horn that's loud enough.

Then you should be ok there. But your wife has to be tough as well. I
remember driving through Paris with some marketeers from the US as
passengers (actually one from Phoenix). I can still hear their screams
when we zipped into a roundabout. Even though I told them that there
were at least a couple inches of clearance everywhere and that this is
quite normal they vowed to never step into a car in Paris anymore.

In Italian, double letters are pronounced double. In the case
of the double c, you *pause* on the glottal stop for the first
c, then remove the stop for the 2nd c. To an English speaker,
it feels almost like actually saying the c twice - Roc-ca.

Same things with delle - the tongue pauses on the palette for
the first l, then continues for the 2nd l - like del-le.

"a" is always said as in "father".

In "Macie", the "ie" is like the one at the end of "gracie". It
has a distinct eee-ayy sound - i.e. both vowels are separately
sounded, not combined into a dipthong as in English.

My wife and I stayed in Castellina in Chianti, where the Rocca delle Macie
estate is, for a few weeks in 1999. The pizzeria in that town had a better
wine list than most upscale restaurants I've been to. We ate there quite a
few times during our stay. Tasty memories.

Hello Jim,

Sounds like a good idea, as long as you reserve plenty of time for one
region. I'd probably fly into Rome and take it easy.

We rented a villa in Tuscany (near Arezzo and Cortona). Fabulous food,
beautiful countryside, and quite reasonable prices (except for
gasoline, of course). I don't have any trouble driving in Rome or
Paris, but parking is horribly expensive, and smaller places are very
cramped for vehicles of any size (eg. the center of Firenze).
Have you ever driven in Italy? It certainly is not for the faint of
heart. Make sure your rental car has a horn that's loud enough.

It's a blood sport. Exhilarating, most males will enjoy it!

The trains are more relaxing though.

Best regards,
Spehro Pefhany

Last time I looked, they weren't in Italy, and it may take you 4-6 weeks
to get out of town, once you start doing the tourist bit... (;-)

and you can go on the north and the south of italy
every place in italy does really good wines!

if you like sweet wines try 'vinsanto' or 'moscato di pantelleria' very
good with cakes ( like biscuit or things without cream )

in tuscany and umbria there are still home producers of 'grappa'

At ~3 shits a day, such a roll would last almost a year.
