How to spec a simple electronic circuit

Hi, I am teaching myself how electronic circuits work and have attempted diagraming a simple circuit in PartSim but want to eventually do so on a breadboard, as well.

However, I would like to learn how to properly spec out a circuit, if that is the correct term, to make sure the components are sized properly first. Not sure that PartSim will display a fried led from too much current, for example.

Right now I am using a spreadsheet for the calculations. Anyone have some URLs they recommend?

It is hard to give advice without knowing what you know.

Do you know how to determine the max voltages across and currents through each component in your design?

Do you know how to read a darasheet and extract the relevant limits?

If I told you there were no voltages above 10V in a circuit could you put an upper limit on the power rating for a 100 Ohm resistor?

Hi Bob,

No, to all of your questions. I am working with a super simple circuit consisting of a 9V battery, led and resistor.

Does that help you?

And please any URLs you think might be over my head as I will read them.

You have the parts so check what their ratings are and go from there.
