for my a level project i need to make something that has a light incorporated into it, i have chosen to do a chess board that when the chess pieces are moved the square that they are placed onto lights up, my dilemma is that i do not have a very good idea on how to do this. if anyone knows how this can be accomplished (as cheaply as possible) please message me on b r e t t l u f f m a n @ h o t m a i l . c o . u k (no spaces)

They may make some kind of large matrix touch-switch board somewhere.
I'd be looking at sensitive touch (or push-button) small switches.
They have some that light when depressed, or you could get small switches, and tie them
to an LED/lens square, as the chess-board squares.
Somebody else might get on here with an already proven method.
I'm thinking cheap.

What are the chess pieces made of? Thinking of another thread just posted, if the pieces where metal you could use a inductive proximity sensor to drive an LED for each square. Not sure what the cost would be though.

A magnet in each piece could activate a reed relay.
With shiny bases, a led and sensor could be used.
