If you’ve got a business—you didn’t build that.

Later as faster models evolved that same model still sold
for awhile but was labeled the Smartmodem 300. ( vs 1200 )

I would partly agree with you that Hayes deserves
credit, because Computer BBS's and especially
FIDONET deserve some credit as an ancestor
of the modern internet.

not an ancestor. the two were developed in paralllel,
The way FIDO nightly dumped packets of various
messages was a smart way to avoid the high cost
of long distance services at that time.

Even a bit of the redundancy and rerouting that
are supposedly hallmarks of modern internet
existed on FIDONET.

Nah fidonet used static (pre-determined) routing mediated
by the Zone, region, node heirachy and the SeenBy header line

I was 3:640/1042 for a short period.
If Competition and lower pricing in the long distance
telephone industry would have taken place earlier,
FIDONET might easily have evolved into something
similar to today's internet.

fidonet was reliant on afforadable data transfer charges
and lots of volunteers, cooperation was important but
not always present.
GE's GENIE and Compuserve might also have
evolved, but if you paid for their services you were
mostly paying for their telecommunication network.

Into what? monopolies have a tendency to stifle innovation.

There was a time when it was faster and cheaper to buy a seat on an
airplane coast to coast, and carry a magtape, than to send data over
the phone network.

"You wouldn't believe the bandwidth of a 747 full of 6250bpi mag tapes."

Do you imagine there aren't any businesses in Guyana?
Or that their main problem is roads?

When I was in Africa, their main problem was security--people
trying to take their stuff. That was either directly, criminally,
or indirectly, criminally, by government.  Obama promotes something
uncomfortably like that.

That will NEVER work, as it doesn't fix why poor people are poor,
and it scares the hell out of and chases away businesses that can.
That's the road to Guyana, not the road out.

I agree with you but Guyana is not in Africa.

[...]

Guyana, Ghana - a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

How about the bandwidth of a 747 full of 741s?

I forgot to ask, how is DimBulb in bed? Is he better than your sheep?

I couldn't tell you, it seems I saw some one there before me, looked
a lot like you. Had your signature on Dim-Bulb's butt.

Yea, but left the bill for Obanana.
And you will have to pay back China,
creating hyper inflation may help reduce that deficit,
but not 'infinitely'.
I was just reading about a new high speed train in California,
payed for by freshly printed green paper?
I tried the math, but got a few billiuon short,
lets see: It costs 4.1 Billion and creates 8000 jobs.
So I was thinking how much it would cost to early retire those 8000,
and somehow the numers are funny.
Maybe I misunderstood the CNN article.
Not counting cost overruns.
BTW I once took a greyhound from LA to Frico....
50 $ at that time IIRC.
High speed cars?
Where is NASA?

Concorde for sale?

High speed trains would be great if they would just do it, and not
spend billions on them. Instead, they study them, they look at them,
they build demonstrations of them, they do little feasibility studies
of them, and so they spend an order of magnitude more for them than
they should cost.

If they really made financial sense, you would have private businesses
buying up right of way as we speak!

Why, when we can force you "invest" in it?

No small part of the problem is the way the federal Govmonks have mucked
up railroads from the very beginning.

Who needs large packages? How about a briefcase full of 32 GB SD cards?

The burden of building and maintaining right of way fell on the
railroads, while the burden of building and maintaining roads fell on
all of the taxpayers.

I wish he was a socialist. We would have single payer healthcare rather
than those damn private insurance pigs.

I doubt Geitner would be around if Obama was a socialist. Hint, no
Geitner is a good thing.

The main problem with supersonic planes was that the US did not want the
big *BANG* over their territory.

Are you saying that military airplanes don't go supersonic in US airspace?

I just happen to have a tennis friend that went to college with Joe
Biden, he tells me "Joe Biden is a complete self centered asshole/arsehole".

Since the point at issue was that big corporations have the money to pay
lobbyists to insert tax loopholes into legislation, this is all
irrelevant.

The government doesn't collect as much tax as it should from
big corporations (and their customers) so it has to collect more from
everybody else,

When you said, "(and their customers) so it has to collect more from
everybody else"

That's the point, all corporate taxes are paid by everybody else.
So why not let everybody else pay the taxes and let corporations make
business decisions instead of tax decisions.
