As you know, there are plenty of devices that will turn on lights when it is dark out, and turn them off in the morning.

I have a pond however, whose pump I want on in the day, but automatically off at night. Is there a circuit that can do this? Bear in mind that the pump plugs into 120v

Thank-you

You could use one of those devices to switch the coil of a SPDT or DPDT relay. Use the relay contacts to switch the pump.

Is there a schematic for that somewhere. I am not versed enough to understand that.

What is the operating current or power for the pump motor? It should be on the label.

There are a multitude of 555 LDR circuits out there (Google), you would just need to juxtapose the pot or res with the LDR to get the reverse action.
If an AC pump, use a relay on the output, if DC, a Mosfet.

Normally swap the position of the LDR for whichever light/dark.
