years ago casio had colour screen organizers, the screens could do blue
green and orange but somehow they did this using the standard dot matrix
character displays you see in printers, fax machines and the likes, that
is, there wasn't 1 pixel per colour but the pixel elements were able to
morph between colours much like the t-shirts of the 90's.

what i want to know is, what exactly was happening to get these pixels
to colour shift and are these screens still available.

i notice the ipod mini uses a similar system where the screens pixels
can go from blank to grey to blue. effectively greating a 4 colour
screen with shading.

no. its similar to the information displays used in consumer electronics
like the 16x2 character displays that use the 8x5 pixel matrix but where
the pixels can be driven to display a colour probably by adjusting pixel
drive voltage or somthing. when using the furtherest colour from off,
the pixel actually progresses from clear to blue then green than orange
taking about 1/10th of a second. the effect is reversed when the pixel
is blanking again.

remember the fish tank thermometers where the squares changed colour?
