Hello everybody,

I own an audio tape recorder Sony TC-366, 30 years old...
How to find spare belts ?
Where to find the service manual to adjust the mechanism ?

Yes it's an old timer but I own so much tapes with family souvenirs...
And it was a very fine recorder.
Sure, DVD recorders are better but....

Regards,

André

Andre,

Contact the Sony parts distributor(s) in your country, they might still
have some belts available, and hopefully will have a copy of the service
manual. There is not much to adjust in these mechanisms, unless someone
has forced or bent something. The biggest issue is lubrication. Many
of the old oils and greases will have dried out and turned to putty.
The old lubes need to be cleaned out before applying fresh lubes. I
would not take apart the entire mechanism, but threat the symptoms on a
piece by piece basis.

Unless you have alignment tapes and proper test equipment, I would not
try to align the heads. Also, if the heads have a lot of ware, the worn
groves in them can cause edge damage to tapes if you try to re-align
them.

Many thanks Tim.

I have find belts, not from Sony but it's good.
I have found the service manual from a german office
([email protected]).
I am waiting the book.
The only problem is that the function selector don't lock.
I hope the service manual shall be useful.

Andre', I seem to recall the selector "cam" would wear out and the knob
wouldn't lock. That was pretty common problem with those early Sony tape
machines. If that's the case then the cam needs replacing but I don't
know if the part is still available from Sony. Last I heard they had
liquidated their tape machine parts inventory and that was in the mid
80's IIRC.

You do know you need to hold up the shut off lever, otherwise the function knob
goes right back to stop.

1-as someone stated, there is a tape shut off sensor lever that must be
held up to allow the transport knob to lock.
2-I have found that failure to lock in spite of the sensor position is
caused by lubrication and alignment problems in the sensor mechanism. This
is quite a bit of work to fix, and requires removing the entire head plate
to access the small pawl mechanism that locks the knob when tape holds the
sensor up. If you have the service manual, I can refer you to the relevant
parts.
