Wireless Coms Between 2 MCU's

Hi Guys,

I'm wondering if you can point me in the right direction as what MCU's and transceivers to use as i'm quite new this working with PIC's..

I need to create wireless controller that will be battery powered to link to a mains powered receiver, the controller will have up 12 momentary buttons and up to 12 status LED's (one for each button)

There will only be a few meters between the TX and RX..

i need the status LED's (on the remote) to be controllable from the receiver and i need to be able to switch 12 relays from the receiver so i'm thinking IO expanders? (I've never used one)

Any pointers greatly appreciated.

I'd like to code it in C..
