Portable CD Player Adapter For Car

Hi, I just wanted to ask about the role of the capacitors in this design.

Second, if i replace the voltage regulator by a voltage divider circuit, assuming that the input resistance of a discman is very high (true assumption?) compared to the resistance of my design, would it work?
Thanks...

Hi Esh,
Welcome to our forum.  ;D
Please attach the circuit's schematic to your post or provide a link to it so we can see which capacitors you are talking about.

A voltage regulator powers a circuit with a fixed constant voltage that doesn't change when the input voltage changes or when the circuit's supply current changes. A voltage divider with two resistors in series from the car's 9V to 15V won't be regulated. The divider's voltage will fluctuate with the car's voltage. The divider's voltage will also drop when the Discman's motor uses a high supply current to start turning.

A Discman doesn't have inputs so doesn't have an input resistance. It just needs a stable supply voltage with enough current for it to operate properly. If the voltage regulator's voltage is correct for your Discman, why not use it? If it needs a voltage that is not available in a fixed regulator, a variable output voltage regulator can be used such as the LM317.

The function of the capacitors are explained in the regulator's datasheet.  ;D
