It detects and indicates when sounds exceed a certain loudness.
You could add a lowpass filter so it detects only low frequency sounds, add a bandpass filter so it detects only mid-frequency sounds and add a highpass filter so it detects only high frequency sounds.

You could replace the output transistor with an LM3915 bar-graph driver IC that drives 10 LEDs and shows actual loudness.
