Really, TV has always relied on Sound and Video interleaved which does a very nice job, esp with the high end sound systems... but I've just had a vision of the future in home entertainment and here's how it works..
Reality meets TV, what i hear you ask.
You're watching a scary movie, a knock at the window takes place or a knock at the door, the knocking at the door is sequences in time with the movie so when a knock happens on TV, you hear your own door knocking, or someone tapping on the window, your lights in the room start to flicker or the lights all go out someone cut the power and you're left in darkness after the room being alive and bright with light...
you're watching a space type movie, the walls around you light up meter showers falling to earth, there's a huge explosion, all the red led's flash and explode in sequence with the movie all around you.
you're watching an action movie, you step into the underwater and blue LED strips above you an below you immerse you into a sea of blue ocean like surroundings...
you're watching an action movie, above your viewing tv screen a clock appears either digital or analogue, a picture of the suspect(s) come up on the screen above, when the detective emails another detective, your phone will get a bluetooth message along with a picture of the suspect.
obviously you can combine all, and a lot more, basically how I think it should work is an extra data stream or hijack teletext, have the output go to a microprocessor and have a series of instructions....
location (front,left,backleft,backright); L,1,2,3,4
event, E,1,2,3,4,5,.....255
eg, explosion, however complicated this may get, this is the very basics, the stream is decoded fet to a microprocessor and all the noises, from a real door knock... it will add realism to a tv program or film, much much more effectively than 3D.
It also allows people on the cheap to hack the protocol and make their own systems to compete with say the likes of Samsung, who could make your whole house become part of the film experience....... someone upstairs as foot prints in your own home are heard, hidden speakers in different rooms, breezes from hidden fans that blow into the room, controlling the temprature of the room, making it warmer colder depending on the mood of the film from chilling (quite literally on a cold days night even thought it may be 100f out)....
