Really, TV has always relied on Sound and Video interleaved which does a very nice job, esp with the high end sound systems... but I've just had a vision of the future in home entertainment and here's how it works..

Reality meets TV, what i hear you ask.

You're watching a scary movie, a knock at the window takes place or a knock at the door, the knocking at the door is sequences in time with the movie so when a knock happens on TV, you hear your own door knocking, or someone tapping on the window, your lights in the room start to flicker or the lights all go out someone cut the power and you're left in darkness after the room being alive and bright with light...

you're watching a space type movie, the walls around you light up meter showers falling to earth, there's a huge explosion, all the red led's flash and explode in sequence with the movie all around you.

you're watching an action movie, you step into the underwater and blue LED strips above you an below you immerse you into a sea of blue ocean like surroundings...

you're watching an action movie, above your viewing tv screen a clock appears either digital or analogue, a picture of the suspect(s) come up on the screen above, when the detective emails another detective, your phone will get a bluetooth message along with a picture of the suspect.

obviously you can combine all, and a lot more, basically how I think it should work is an extra data stream or hijack teletext, have the output go to a microprocessor and have a series of instructions....

location (front,left,backleft,backright); L,1,2,3,4
event, E,1,2,3,4,5,.....255

eg, explosion, however complicated this may get, this is the very basics, the stream is decoded fet to a microprocessor and all the noises, from a real door knock... it will add realism to a tv program or film, much much more effectively than 3D.

It also allows people on the cheap to hack the protocol and make their own systems to compete with say the likes of Samsung, who could make your whole house become part of the film experience....... someone upstairs as foot prints in your own home are heard, hidden speakers in different rooms, breezes from hidden fans that blow into the room, controlling the temprature of the room, making it warmer colder depending on the mood of the film from chilling (quite literally on a cold days night even thought it may be 100f out)....

Who likes this?

I'll probably die before I wear a set of glasses to watch a 3D movie!

Just giving you some feedback from a consumers perspective. It seems clunky, like glasses for 3D. Can you imagine all the work to make such a system feasible? Would be better in a group atmosphere, but I am afraid they have already done this. Walt disney beat you to it by about 10 years.

your room becomes part of the movie experience not something you put up and down once a week, once installed it's done until upgraded type of thing, what next, don't want the sound system, it's a bit clunky like 3D?

Where have you guys been?
Go to the Disneyland 3-D movie theatre.
Somebody sneezes, you get a mist spray in the face.
The screen shows an explosion, your chair shakes.
Mice run off the screen, you feel air puffs on your feet.
Your wear 3-D glasses, but the effects are great.
If you go, don't miss the Muppet 3-D show in the kiddie-land section of the park, you
won't believe how good it is.

There is a ride at the amusement park, that is like that, that is a rocket ship. It is amazing!
If you get a chance to see it, don't miss it, you won't be sorry.

What park? Where?

As far as the future of realistic "TV"...
I am thinking you pick a show or genre and a bunch of people set it all up to immerse you in the role of one of the characters. There are actors that play the role of all the other characters. There are people that modify your house or neighborhood as needed for that one porduction. Everything that is needed to make it all as realistic as possible.

(Caveat: Don't select Horror as a genre and definately don't select Psycho as your title, unless you get to play Norman Bates.)

I like you cjdelphi :D You have crazy and interesting ideas even if not always the most practical.

Anyway, while I dont think something like this would catch on commercially, I did find myself thinking about it analytically *cue incidental music*....

This is something you could probably do in your own home and be really cool if you have friends over to watch a film (you might also find you have a whole bunch of new people wanting to be your friend - lol)

Just remember to be secretive about it - you know how anal these companies get about their copyright and the messages at the start saying not for public screening etc. They'd crack down on you then steal your idea just for hell of it.

Anyway - What youd want is a proper PC or laptop as a controller. You'd have a specific set of devices that you interface with such as the house's lighting circuit, an LED array for the ceiling etc. The sequences for these would have to be pain-stakingly programmed for each film, scene by scene. They would also have to be synchronised with the media player itself. (which is why youd need a high end computer with a user friendly interface) and eventually youd build up a library of films with associated peripheral control.

Thats the best way I can think of to do it anyway. I say go for it and good luck :)

P.S. Can I be your new best friend if it works - lol

I went outside the other day.

*WOW* the graphics were great. I'd love to know what 3D engine they're using. You move from sunshine to shade and you can actually FEEL the temperature change.

And you can interact realistically with other gamers.

Just watch out though. If you stuff it up you can't just resurrect yourself (well, I hear someone did once -- apparently a relative of the game designer -- but he hasn't come back yet)

Have you ever been stuck in front of a computer so long that when you go outside you actually see pixels everywhere you look? Consider yourself lucky :)

lol,,,, my mind is constantly coming up with new things, I have lots and lots of new ideas and concepts coming to me all the time, but 9/10 way out of my skill range to develop myself, i'm all for Open-Hardware and open source (meaning, providing some company does not patent something and then sue me for stealing it, I could not be bothered really)... If i build the thing to make the chair shake, to make the walls come to life to give the film realism and added depth, of course you can be my friend lol.... :p
