Swapping Out Boards, Repairing and the Economics Considerations Involved

I worked in aviation, where every second counted, so it was "swap a box" and "if in doubt, chuck it out". But I started off in the component overhaul area, so learnt how they worked and failed, and everything was repaired, right down to the smallest electronic or mechanical component. I then...

    Voltage regulator or not?

If you are just running a water pump, you could start off with a supply a couple of volts more at the supply end (I would go to 15V), with enough current capacity.

    Multimeter DIY test leads gauge

If you are just doing continuity or voltage checks on your car, you could use a piece of flexible mains wire (like an extension cord ), and strip out the separate wires, solder some alligator clips on there, and you're away.

    Low voltage drop diode

I am using it for a solar panel. I found some MBR20100CT's locally. This is a 2 diode package, and rated at 20A ,so should do the job.

    Low voltage drop diode

Is there a diode which has a lower voltage drop than the standard 0.5v for a silicon unit, but I need something which can handle up to 10 amps. The germanium type were less, but I don't think there were large power ones made, only small signal type.

How do you store your test leads?

I have a piece of aluminium sheet screwed to the top of a head height cabinet, which I have mounted all those odd 4mm panel mount sockets (the ones which you could never find the matching partner for) or the odd coloured ones, to store 4mm plug leads . I store any leads which have alligator...

Thanks, I managed to fangle enough cells to be within 43 mAh , so I will go with these.

    18650 cell matching

I have just got a large batch of used 18650's which I have sorted and capacity checked. I want to make a battery pack, 6P / 3S, ( and using a suitable charger,) and would like to know about matching capacities. Is it more important that the series groups , the parallel groups or the whole lot...

Newb needing guidance on 3-phase service.

Have you actually measured the line voltages with respect to neutral? Unbalanced 3 phase voltages would end in damage to equipment, or loss of "smoke".

5v PWM signal to hold 12v relay closed (Automotive)

The propane cut-out is basically a relay which requires a constant ignition pulse to enable a +12VDC output. It has 4 terminals- +12v input, ignition pulse input ( connected to the "points" connection of the distributor), +12V output, and ground. So if there is an ignition signal input, there...

5v PWM signal to hold 12v relay closed (Automotive)

I see you have worked out all the relevant signals and circuitry, but have you considered an easier system like a propane shut-off device? I have fitted many to older cars, they are easy to install and readily available.

    Dim fluorescent display

My old (about 35 years) microwave has a multi-digit green fluorescent display, and has been in constant daily use since new. I have just noticed after so many years that the display is hardly readable- I have been using it on the same setting, so never really took much notice of the display. Do...

Seeking advice to connect wires to power source other than twisting wires together

You could always have a couple of heaters through a switch or plug & socket arrangement so that these supply your "base heat", then have a couple of elements going through a PID controller (which basically supplies power to the element up to the set point temp. then turns it off , then on again...
