    Sounds like a temperature sensor problem given the "toggle" aspect. Could also be a sticky relay.(more likely) With the unit re-assembled, and the fault present, a sharp wack in the vicinity of the relays could do the same job as toggling and give an indication that the relay is sticky...

    If you want the motor to run when the relay coil is powered. Positive of battery to common, normally open (n/o) contact to the motor. Naturally battery negative directly to motor negative. If motor spins wrong direction, reverse motor leads.

    Photo is a sign of a wire break usually due to flexing in the one spot continually and under relatively high current a hot spot occurs. As it is a mains cable , then replace it, don't try to rejoin as insulation properties will be voided.
