    Why not measure the voltage first? Just about any P.M. motor will generate when back driven, a DC brushed motor will generate a voltage equivalent to the voltage required to rotate it at that rpm. A BLDC motor will generate a 3 phase sine wave. M.

    If the change is due to the exposed/fragility of the slotted disc, are you sure it would not benefit simply by replacing it with a enclosed/sealed rotary encoder? The only thing exposed is the rotor shaft. M.

    If you can get hold of the relevant operator manuals, they usually tell you this much. The LED status depends on the make of controller board and the model.     If the power is fed from a 3pin plug then it has a earth GND which you do not reference for test purposes, at some point on the board I would expect to see the 9vdc, the 9v common is usually the ground plane on the circuit board. M.

    I doubt it was enough to sever the conductor, a test is to exert some tension on either side of the crimp and see if the insulation stretches indicating a break, M.
