    You could just leave a few inches of wire strip 1/2 inch or so insulation off and twist together wires with small blue wire nuts. It's wise to not make wires too long where noise could be introduced.

    I saw your sketch but I'm not sure of your objective. Why is a timer or photocell driving an actuator? Does your actuator have limit switches to prevent overtravel? The actuator shouldn't draw any power once its reached its limits. Holding current on a relay coil is rather insignificant...

    A sharp hatchet was how Grandpa did it. I can't recommend a sensor for you, but have you considered redesigning your X shaped frame to either a rotating blade, or two blades that act like shears? Perhaps a guillotine isn't the best approach?

    It works by changing polarity to the motor with an H-bridge circuit. It's not a short. Positive feeds relay and Negative is switched through the switch. If you scared you could use a 1 amp glass automotive fuse to short it out.

    On trick that has worked for me is, gently cleaning the ribbon cable ends with alcohol and the copper traces they contact with an eraser from a #2 pencil. Also check the metal bezel around the lcd display. If it doesn't contact well, it can cause display to drop out.

    Instead of 4 or 5 trigger points, why not go right to a Pwm circuit that'd send a varying output right to the fans?
