    Not only is my math terrible but I thought a 570Ω resistor was mentioned. I obviously chose a 560Ω to be the closest. I also assumed a 1.8V fV and 4.5V supply. Totalling 100mA for all 20 @ 5mA each. But I stand corrected. Martin

    The resistor can be placed in either leg/side. Your set is either in parallel or two in series then paralleled. Use a multimeter across the LEDs to get voltage and then in series with the set to get current. Then the resistor can be calculated. Martin

    The CR2032 doesn’t supply much current at all, hence no resistor required. The 12V OTOH can. Series current limiting resistor will be required. It if worked on CR2032 but doesn’t now on 12V, you probably killed the LEDs. Martin

    It doesn’t matter which connection is used. But keeping with the ‘norm’, the outer screw section would be neutral and the single bottom connection would be live.     Just a thought, are these 20 rice LEDs on a string of copper? With 2 x AA or a coin cell battery? If so, the above posts won’t work unless you want each 20 LEDs to flash at the same time. ie, you can’t get a string of 20 to flash sequentially 1,2,3…etc. (Without rewiring them all). Martin

    The circuits you’ve seen are probably a 555 and a 4017 IC?. The 10 LEDs are (probably) purely because the CD4017 has 10 outputs. However, these can be cascaded for more outputs. Alternatively, an Arduino micro controller and addressable LEDs can achieve your goal 100 times over. Can you link or...
