    Your arrangement was described thus: B1 - B2 - B3 - B4 B5 - B6 - B7 - B8 There are two 'legs' (B1 to B4) and (B5 to B8) i.e. B1 to B4 are in series therefore their battery voltages ADD (6V) B5 to B8 are also in series (6V)

    If your PSU is under-rated then putting in smoothing/decoupling capacitors won't fix the issue. Your PSU should have details on it somewhere but you didn't add a picture (as your post said) so I'm clueless.....

    No, the total voltage will be the sum of the individual 'legs' therefore 4 x 1.5V (twice). Each leg is therefore 6V If each cell was rated at 1Ahr then each 'leg' would be 6V and 1Ahr but two legs in parallel would be 6V 2Ahr. Voltages in series add (but recall you have some in parallel too)...

    Just a chance.... try wetting the surface of the IC's and see if it reveals any of the codes on them. It's sometime possible to decipher them this way. Another method is to use a very fine wipe of heatsink compound (the white stuff). Worth trying to see if anything shows.

    Oh no, no, no....:confused: you shouldn't use that stuff, it's far too corrosive. Use flux-cored solder and, if necessary, a flux pen or IPA-type for additional flux.

    You don't show the actual 5V power supply. What is its rating? You really should add smoothing and decoupling capacitors on the power distribution board. Put a 1000μF in parallel with a 100nF capacitor on the 5V/GND board that the power is being distributed from.
