    To try to do this to the accuracy a machine table requires using an accelerometer is futile. Forget it. Use capacitive coupling or capacitive scales - even an optical strip arrangement would be better than anything an accelerometer could deliver. You're setting yourself up to fail.

    It's more likely to be the capacitor to the right of this transformer that needs changing: Looks suspiciously 'bulging' to me - a common cause of faults like yours. There may by other dud parts but the capacitor needs changing anyway. Post close up image of this area, top and bottom of board.

    Replace it with a 470k 1/4watt resistor (yellow, violet, yellow) and I think you'll find the neon works perfectly ok.

    Fault-finding that board is going to be a nightmare/impossible other than checking for the main device voltage rails. You have a 5V supply from the USB port that is converted to 'various' other supplies for the other components on there and, in the main, it's either a 1.5V, 1.8V or a 3.3V...

    ISTR you actually fitted those devices before I pointed out the pin assignment was incorrect. If you actually powered up then you *****d them immediately. Unless you have good reason for needing identical pinouts then simply bending the leads up and cross-soldering them to the CORRECT pads...

    Is it a component? A 45 degree view might help. It could just be a pressure pad to relieve flexing on the board? I can't see any solder pads or tracks to it.

    Such transistors may be Darlingtons as well as conventional so care must be taken to ensure you get the right replacement. The schematic would reveal the 'type' (Darlington or not) but such components are rated in single-digit amps and around 10-30W dissipation a la BD139/140...

    Very likely to be a resistor as these are used in series with neon indicators. You are SURE it's a neon indicator though? Due to the extremely low current consumption of the neon it is likely that your meter has made a significant effect on your voltage readings hence them being out of kilter...

    The common denominator is obviously the power supply. This should be readily separable and still be 'connectible' to the main unit as there will only be a couple of output voltages/rails. If you can be more specific about the fault symptoms this may also assist. But given that such units...

    Trimming them so the edges are parallel my prove difficult but not impossible. Using strips with differing pitch would be preferred as equal pitch strips WOULD require careful alignment.

    The parallel solution was what I initially proposed (but requiring the /EN signals from a 3-of-8 decoder).

    If you wish to cascade them then the 'parallel' solution proffered is not required and cascading seems perfectly 'do-able'.
